British Chess Championships 2023 – Chess Festival

Here is the schedule of BCC 2023 festival events which will run alongside the main tournaments.

Friday 21st July Welcome Event and Friday 28th July Championship Event
Outdoor drop-in chess tables and Giant Chess Set

Friday 21st July Welcome Event 1.00-6.00pm – The Half Circle, New Walk, Leicester
Friday 28th July Mill Lane 1.00-6.00pm – DMU Campus (square between Kimberlin Library and Vijay Patel Building)
Both events will be compered by FM Jonathan Blackburn and open to all. No need to register, just turn up and play or watch.


Weekend of 22nd and 23rd July – 6.30pm each evening
Simultaneous Displays with Grandmaster Keith Arkell

Saturday 22nd, Wednesday 26th and Saturday 29th July
Checkmate Chess Film Mini-Season with drop-in chess

Location – Phoenix Cinema and Arts Centre in Leicester
The local Phoenix Cinema and Arts Cenre will be showing a mini-season with three films during the championship, including Pawn Sacrifice (7.30pm on Saturday 22nd July), Queen of Katwe (Wednesday 26th July), and The Seventh Seal (Saturday 29th July). The Phoenix is a cinema, art gallery and café bar in the cultural quarter in Leicester city centre, about 20 minutes walk through town from the Venue. All three films are highly recommended, and in addition to the screenings we are planning for a number of local players to be available in the cafe bar area for some casual drop-in chess before the films on Wednesday and Saturday.

Social Chess Evenings – team events including Hand and Brain, and Bughouse

Masterclass on Attacking Chess and Calculation with GM Danny Gormally in the Commentary Room


Wednesday 26th July – 6.00 to 7.00pm
Zwischenzug Lecture and Puzzle Solving with Prize

Location –  DMU Venue
WIM Natasha Regan and NI Matthew Ball, co-authors of Chessable course Zwischenzug!, will be hosting a lecture and puzzle solving contest. Prizes will be available for the top solvers and this will be a great opportunity to learn more about the art of in-between moves.
